Arlington County Fair: The Civic Federation will host a booth at the Fair to feature Arlington's many neighorhood civic associations. Provide information on your civic association on this form. Provide staffing assistance. For more information, contact Peter Olivere at civfed.org.
The County Master Transportation Plan: Streets Element has just been released with September 6 as the deadline for comment. For more information or to convey comments, contact Jerry Auten at civfed.org.
September 7: Candidates Night will open the 2010-2011 Civic Federation schedule (see rules for candidates). A resolution on LED Street Lighting, presented at the June membership meeting has been referred to the Public Services Committee for action at the September 2010 meeting.

President Mike Kerley presented a summary of the ACCF resolution on the parking element of the transportation master plan to the County Board on Saturday, November 14, 2009.
June 1: Our June newsletter, the Civic Voice contains the full agenda (also see agenda and reports) for the June 1 membership meeting. The highlight of the meeting was County Board Chair Jay Fisette's introduction of new County Manager Michael Brown. The meeting will also feature election of officers for 2010-2011 (see slate in newsletter and our appreciation to the Nominating Committee) and an informational presentation on the County's Capital Improvement Plan (CIP) presented by the Revenues and Expenditures and the Schools Committees. Both presentations on the Capital Improvement Plan from the meeting are available: County and Schools.
May 4: Our May newsletter, the Civic Voice contains the full agenda (also see agenda and reports) for the May 4 membership meeting. The content of the meeting will focus on Housing and Code Enforcement, followed by an update on the Cultural Center (Artisphere). The Civic Federation Housing Committee, Planning and Zoning Committee, and Public Services Committee presented a program (see presentation) with guest speakers Benjamin Barksdale, Chief Fire Marshal, Arlington County Fire Department; Susan Bell, Director, Arlington County Department of Community Planning, Housing and Development; and Dan Murray, Deputy Chief, Arlington County Police Department. The progress and status of the Cultural Center (Artisphere) and the economic impact of arts in Arlington was described (see presentation) by guest speakers Norma Kaplan, Division Chief, Arlington County Cultural Affairs, and John Seal, Chair, Arlington County Commission for the Arts.
The County Board has named Michael Brown as the new County Manager, to begin May 17. County Board Chair Jay Fisette will introduce Mr. Brown to Civic Federation members at the June 1 membership meeting.
On Tuesday, May 11, the Civic Federation, represented by Sal D'Itri, chair of the Public Services Committee, participated in an Arlington County ceremony to honor fallen members of the Arlington County Police Department.

April 6: Our April newsletter, the Civic Voice outlines the program -- see agenda and reports -- for our annual examination of the County's budget, with recommendations. This is the Revenues and Expenditures Committee and Schools Committees' meeting on recommendations for the Arlington County and Arlington School budgets. The FY 2011 budget report from Revenue and Expenditures and Schools committees is available. After deliberation by delegatesn the combined report was put to Civic Federation member delegates as two up or down votes. The Revenues and Expenditures Committee report on the County budget was accepted by delegates 45 to 6 and the Schools Committee report on the Arlington Public Schools budget was accepted on a vote of 36 to 12. Separate recommendations to restore proposed reductions in the Fire and Police Departments were adopted by delegates by votes of 49 to 2 (police department reductions) and 49 to 3 (fire department reductions).
The Civic Federation Annual Banquet was held on Friday, April 16. See invitation and details. Vivek Kundra, Chief Information Officer (CIO) of the United States, was the banquet speaker.

The Revenues and Expenditures Committee met with Civic Federation Committee Chairs on the proposed County budget on March 14, 2010
March: Our March meeting featured the Federation's annual meeting with members of the Arlington County School Board. School Board members addressed many questions directed to them by member delegates.
February: Our February meeting featured the Federation's annual meeting with members of the County Board The meeting was interesting and was well-attended despite the snowy evening.
The Executive Committee met on March 8, 2010, at 7:30 p.m. at Carlin Hall (5711 4th Street, South) to plan future Civic Federation general meeting programs. Contact members of the Executive Committee for more information.

December: Our December newsletter, the Civic Voice contains the full agenda (see agenda and reports) for the December 1 membership meeting, including a resolution on low-flying military helicopters over residential areas that was considered at the December 1 membership meeting and postponed (see draft minutes) to the January 5 membership meeting (for background information see executive summary, 2005 helicopter regional plan and helicopter route map). Two presentations are available: Acting County Manager Barbara Donnellan on the FY 2011 county budget and Patrick Murphy, Arlington Public Schools Superintendent on the 2011 outlook for Arlington County Schools. Nancy Graham, a long-time Civic Federation delegate and Chair of the Legislation Committee, passed way on Tuesday. You may recall that her husband Bill (himself a former CivFed President) died last summer. Nancy received the Order of Distinguished Meritorious Service in 2002. Her calm leadership kept the Legislation Committee on an even keel in a difficult period. She was made an Honorary Delegate (our first) in 2005 when she and Bill moved outside Arlington. Nancy's funeral will be at St. George's Episcopal Church, 915 N. Oakland Street (Oakland and Fairfax, Virginia Square metro) on Friday, December 18, 2009, at 11:00 am. ALERT: Arlington County has released the Parking and Curb Space Management Element of the Transportation Master Plan that will be considered by the County Board on November 14 with the County Manager recommendation. The earlier draft was supplemented with a summary fact sheet and a summary of new initiatives.
On October 28, Barbara Favola (Chair, Arlington County Board), Mary Hynes (member, Arlington County Board) and Mike Kerley (President, Arlington County Civic Federation) met informally with civic association presidents from Arlington Forest (Julie Kirchhoff), Ballston-VA Square (Ali Gungor), Barcroft (Bryant Monroe), Douglas Park (John Snyder), Fairlington (Sam Anthony), Nauck (Portia Clark) and Woodmont (Sharon Rogers). The purpose of the meeting was to discuss the successes and challenges in each neighborhood and share strategies for neighborhoods to partner effectively with the County. The conversation also provided feedback on basic neighborhood-focused services, such as the new recycling program, traffic management, youth sports, and emergency services. The goal is for each Civic Federation member president to attend one of these meetings over the next couple of years. The next group will probably be invited in January.
October: The October 6 ACCF Membership Meeting (see agenda and reports) will feature three programs: 2010 Census; Affordable Housing; H1N1 and Seasonal Flu Preparation in Arlington. Our October newsletter, the Civic Voice contains the full agenda for the October 6 meeting as well as committee news and activities. This proposed resolution on park land acquisition and capital project funding was developed a joint meeting of Revenue & Expenditures Committee and Parks & Recreation Committee. The lobby opens at 7:00 and the meeting starts at 7:30. Parking is available in the Gold parking garage.
Executive Committee: The Civic Federation, along with the League of Women Voters and Chamber of Commerce, were invited participants in a September 28 meeting with the consultant for the County Manager search. President Mike Kerley presented a letter created by the Executive Committee and Committee Chairs specifying qualities Civic Federation members would like to see in the next County manager.
The Executive Committee will meet on October 12, 2009, at 7:30 p.m. at 2300 Wilson Boulevard (Navy League). Upcoming general meeting business, including agendas and programs, will be discussed. If you are interested in the Legislation Committee general meeting program, please attend the meeting. Contact members of the Executive Committee to let them know your thoughts.
